Benedict the XVI:
Pope Benedict the XVI goes into retirement. This is the first time in 700 hundred years that a pope resigns… I personally think that it is good to be able to tell the pope goodbye. Why should a pope work until death when most of the people retire at 60 or 65?
BENEDICT the XVI became the first pope to resign in 700 years today, ending a turbulent eight-year reign often overshadowed by Vatican infighting and a raft of sex abuse scandals.
The 85-year-old German theologian is only the second pope in the Church’s 2,000-year history to resign of his own free will, announcing to a stunned world on February 11 that he felt he no longer had the “strength of mind and body” to carry on.
His final act was Pope was to wave a final goodbye from the balcony of the papal residence before starting a life of retirement.
